How to read a casino welcome bonus before you deposit

A welcome bonus is a contract with a banner on top. The banner says “100% up to €200”. The contract says how much you must bet, how fast, on which games, and what you can actually withdraw. Read the contract in about five minutes — before any money leaves your account.

Welcome bonuses for Irish players

We do not judge a bonus by its size. We judge it by how much of it a normal player can realistically turn into withdrawable cash. See how we rate for the weighting, and editorial principles for how commercial links do — and do not — affect what we publish.

The headline versus the offer you can use

Every welcome offer has two versions: the headline and the usable offer.

The headline is the marketing line — a percentage, a maximum amount, a spin count. The usable offer is whatever survives the terms. A “€500 bonus” with 50x wagering, a 7-day expiry and a €2 max bet is a different product from a “€100 bonus” with 30x, 30 days and a €5 max bet, even though the first looks five times bigger.

Compare offers with three questions:

  1. What do I have to put in? Qualifying deposit, and which payment methods count.
  2. What do I have to do before I can withdraw? Wagering, time limit, bet size, eligible games.
  3. What’s the most I can walk away with? Win caps and conversion limits.

If you cannot answer all three from the bonus page and the full terms, treat that as a warning. Our bonus warning signs guide covers the red flags in more depth.

Seven terms to check first

Welcome bonus types Irish players see

Qualifying deposit

This is the minimum you must deposit to trigger the offer — often different from the account minimum.

  • The minimum. A €10 account floor may become €20 or €30 for the bonus.
  • Automatic vs opt-in. Some bonuses attach to the first deposit; others need a tick-box or code. Miss it and you often cannot add it afterwards.
  • Split packages. Many “welcome packages” spread value across the first three or four deposits — the headline total only applies if you fund repeatedly.

Irish players fund from debit card, bank transfer, e-wallet or similar — not gambling credit. That makes excluded payments (below) especially important.

Wagering base and multiplier

Wagering (playthrough / rollover) is what you must stake before bonus-related funds can be withdrawn. Two details matter: the multiplier and the base.

Same €100 deposit + €100 match at 35x:

Wagering base Calculation Total you must stake
Bonus only €100 × 35 €3,500
Deposit + bonus €200 × 35 €7,000

Same headline, same multiplier, double the work. Look for “bonus only”, “deposit + bonus” or “bonus + winnings”.

A slot at ~96% RTP loses about 4 cents per euro staked on average over the long run. On €3,500 of wagering that is roughly €140 in expected cost — already more than a €100 bonus was worth. On €7,000 it is about €280. That is an average across many players, not a prediction for your session. It shows why the multiplier and base often matter more than the match percentage. Work the numbers with our wagering calculator or the tool on this site’s hubs.

Also check game weighting. Slots usually count 100%. Tables, live casino and video poker often count 10% or 0%. Prefer blackjack? A slots-designed welcome may be close to unusable for you.

Expiry

There are usually two clocks: how long to claim after registering, and how long to clear wagering after credit. Common windows run 7–30 days; free-spin winnings are often shorter.

Do the arithmetic. €3,500 in seven days is €500 a day. If that does not fit your budget or pace, skip the offer — short expiry is designed to speed play, not to suit you.

Maximum bet

While wagering, most casinos cap stake per spin/round (often €2–€5). Exceeding it — once, even by accident — can void the bonus and related wins.

  • The cap often applies to your whole balance while any bonus is active.
  • Some terms ban patterns (e.g. covering most of a roulette table) or bonus-buy features.

Set your stake well below the cap and leave it. At €5, clearing €3,500 takes at least 700 spins; at €1 it takes 3,500.

Maximum cashout or win cap

The ceiling on what you can withdraw from bonus-derived winnings. Common forms:

  • Fixed cap (e.g. free-spin wins capped at €100)
  • Multiple of the bonus (e.g. max conversion 3×)
  • Cap only on the first deposit’s bonus

If a huge playthrough ends at a €50 ceiling, the effort was largely wasted. Read the cap before you start.

Excluded payment methods

Skrill, Neteller, and sometimes PayPal, prepaid vouchers or certain bank rails are frequently excluded from welcomes. Policies differ and change.

Check before you deposit. An excluded method usually means no bonus — and no retroactive credit. If you rely on Revolut or a debit card, confirm it qualifies.

Country and game restrictions

  • Country eligibility. Confirm Ireland is covered and that the version you see is the one you receive.
  • Excluded games. High-RTP or low-volatility slots are often banned from bonus play.
  • Licensing. Prefer operators with a verifiable MGA/UKGC (or GRAI when live for that activity). Match the footer number to a public register — see Irish gambling regulation.

Match bonuses versus free-spin bundles

Match bonuses add a percentage of your deposit as extra funds (e.g. 100% up to €200). Flexible: you choose games and stake; limits are wagering, expiry and max bet.

Free-spin bundles give a set number of spins on specified slots at a fixed value. Check:

  • Value per spin — 50 × €0.10 = €5 of play; 50 × €0.20 = €10
  • Which game — usually locked
  • What happens to winnings — often bonus funds with their own WR (30x–40x) and a win cap
  • Release schedule — all at once, or daily batches that expire if unused

Match bonuses give control; free spins give a cheaper trial with tighter limits. Many Irish packages combine both — read each part’s terms separately.

Sticky versus cashable bonus funds

Sticky vs cashable welcome bonus funds

This is the most misunderstood term.

  • Sticky (non-cashable). The bonus amount is locked. You play with deposit + bonus together; on withdrawal the bonus portion is removed. You can keep winnings (subject to caps), never the bonus itself.
  • Cashable (non-sticky). Real-money deposit is usually played first. Win and withdraw before touching the bonus → forfeit the bonus, keep cash with no wagering. Clear the wagering → bonus converts to withdrawable money.

Worked example: deposit €100, receive €100 bonus, finish at €250.

  • Sticky → withdraw ~€150 (bonus removed)
  • Cashable → withdraw €250 after completing wagering

Sticky is not automatically bad — it can come with lower WR — but you must know which type you took. Look for “bonus funds are non-withdrawable”, “bonus deducted from withdrawal”, or “real money wagered first”. Check whether you can cancel the bonus before using it.

When to skip a welcome offer

Declining is often the best choice. Skip when:

  • You want to withdraw quickly (active bonuses usually block cashout)
  • The expiry does not match how you play
  • The base is deposit + bonus at a high multiplier
  • Your payment method or favourite games are excluded
  • The terms are unclear or contradictory
  • The offer is pushing you to deposit more than you planned

Most casinos let you opt out at registration or in the cashier. Unsure? Take no bonus and play with your own money under simple rules.

Our pre-deposit checklist

  1. Is the bonus opt-in — and did I select or decline it deliberately?
  2. Does my deposit meet the qualifying minimum?
  3. Does my payment method qualify?
  4. Multiplier — and is it bonus only or deposit + bonus?
  5. Total required stake in euro — can I afford that play time?
  6. How long do I have to complete it?
  7. Max bet while active — have I set my stake below it?
  8. Which games count, and at what percentage?
  9. Is there a win cap or conversion limit?
  10. Sticky or cashable?
  11. Can I cancel before using it?
  12. Is Ireland eligible, and does the site show licence details?
  13. Have I saved or screenshotted the terms with today’s date?

If any answer is “I don’t know”, read the full terms before depositing.

Frequently asked questions

What does “wagering requirement” mean?

It is the total amount you must stake before bonus-related funds or winnings become withdrawable. A 35x requirement on a €100 bonus means €3,500 in bets — or €7,000 if it applies to deposit + bonus.

What is a sticky bonus?

A bonus that cannot be withdrawn. You play with deposit and bonus together; when you cash out, the bonus portion is removed. Only winnings (subject to caps) are yours to keep.

How do I claim a casino bonus?

Register, choose the bonus at sign-up or in the cashier (some need a code), then make a qualifying deposit with an eligible payment method. Confirm the bonus shows as active in your account before you play.

Why wasn’t my bonus credited?

Usual causes — excluded payment method, deposit below the minimum, missing code or opt-in, or an account that already used a similar offer. Contact support with deposit details and keep screenshots of the terms you saw.

Can I withdraw while a bonus is active?

Usually not without forfeiting the bonus and sometimes related winnings. Check the terms for what happens to your real-money balance first.

Are casino bonuses legal in Ireland?

Adults aged 18+ can gamble online. The Gambling Regulation Act 2024 created GRAI and is phasing licensing and advertising rules. Which bonuses operators can offer — and how — may change as remote gaming licences roll out. See our regulation guide for the current player-facing picture.

Are casino winnings taxed in Ireland?

Generally, gambling winnings are not taxed in the player’s hands, but rules can change and individual circumstances vary. Check with Revenue or a tax adviser for your situation.

Which is better — free spins or a match bonus?

Neither by default. Match bonuses offer flexibility; free spins offer a cheaper trial with tighter limits. Compare wagering, caps and expiry — not the headline.

How can I tell if a casino is trustworthy?

Look for clear licence information, transparent terms, working withdrawal options and independent complaint routes. See How we rate for what we check.
